Winston Churchill once said, “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” Just ask our HoMA volunteers, who give generously of their time and talents to ensure that the events, exhibitions, and rich experiences we offer deepen the role that art plays in our lives. As a special thank you to these dedicated individuals, we would like to highlight a special couple who have become an integral part of HoMA’s volunteer family through their unwavering commitment to supporting the community through the museum.
Over the course of six years, Cilla and Kevin Arelliano have volunteered about 165 hours each–for a staggering total of 330 hours–welcoming the community to the museum grounds and lending a helping hand wherever it may be needed. A Bank of Hawaii employee and a member of the Bank of Hawaii Blue Crew Volunteers, Cilla spends a Sunday each month helping out at HoMA’s Family Sunday presented by Bank of Hawaii Foundation along with her husband.

Last week at a surprise volunteer appreciation event held at the Bank of Hawaii, the Arelliano’s were recognized for their recent nomination for Honolulu Magazine’s Ola Pono Awards. The distinguished award honors outstanding individuals who volunteer their time and talents to make the islands a better place.
“At the Honolulu Museum of Art, volunteers are at the center of the service experience we extend to our guests each and every day, and Cilla has been one of our most loyal and dedicated volunteers. We can always count Cilla and her husband Kevin to help at our ‘ohana event, Family Sunday presented by Bank of Hawaii Foundation. She always has a smile and a friendly greeting for each and every family that comes through our doors, extending aloha and ho‘okipa to our keiki, some of whom could be experiencing a museum for the very first time in their lives! Our Volunteer Program relies on the generosity of amazing people like Cilla and we are grateful to have her as part of our ‘ohana,” says HoMA Volunteer Program Coordinator Michelle Dolan.
